e-NVH in energy applications

Energy applications can be source of electromagnetic noise and vibrations.

Warranty periods of large electrical energy production units can reach 40 years, and down-time due to generator failures are extremely costly. High vibration levels increase mechanical fatigue and can lead to premature failure. Some generators close from citizens can also make unpleasant “humming noise” or “whining noise” depending on the working frequency. Acoustic standards for wind turbines are generally severe and the tonalities due to electrical noise can be detrimental. The underwater noise created by tidal generators can also disturb the marine environment.

To maximize the reliability and minimize the environmental impact of these electrical systems, one must identify and reduce their noise and vibration sources at design stage. The control of acoustic noise and vibration due to electromagnetic forces is important in the following examples:

  • wind turbine generators (e.g. direct drive permanent magnet or doubly fed induction generators)
  • hydroelectric dam generators
  • tidal turbine generators

Manatee simulation software allows to control the noise level of these components during their whole development cycle, from early design stage to system-level detailed design stage, including specialized e-NVH analysis and mitigation tools.

Complementary to Manatee e-motor NVH virtual prototyping capabilities, EOMYS Engineering can characterize vibro-acoustic issues with advanced electrical, vibration and acoustic measurements and implement suitable electrical, control and mechanical solutions after manufacturing. Regular technical trainings on e-NVH are also provided.
